Delta to Repair Wheelchair of Ms. Wheelchair America 2026 After Flight Damage
Yonkers, NY – Delta Air Lines has pledged to cover the full cost of repairs to the specialized wheelchair of Latavia Sturdivant, who was recently crowned Ms. Wheelchair America 2026. The incident occurred during a flight, leaving Sturdivant unable to continue her advocacy work.
Wheelchair Crucial for Sturdivant’s Health and Advocacy
Sturdivant, traveling home from an event, reported that her wheelchair was damaged during the flight. She emphasized the unique and essential nature of the chair, stating, “There is no other chair that I can use because it keeps my body in proper alignment, prevents me from having contractions and so Delta needs to do better in taking proper care of our wheelchairs.”
Delta’s Response
In a statement, Delta apologized for the experience, acknowledging that it did not meet their standards. “Delta understands the fundamental impact that any damaged mobility aid has on an individual and their daily life. We sincerely apologize for this customer’s experience that did not live up to our standards, and we are in touch with them to ensure we make things right,” the airline said. ABC7 Chicago and ABC7 reported on the incident and Delta’s response.
Advocacy Disrupted
The damage to the wheelchair has temporarily halted Sturdivant’s advocacy work, highlighting the critical role accessible transportation plays in the lives of individuals with disabilities. People Magazine also covered the story, emphasizing the disruption to Sturdivant’s activities.
