Unruly Passenger Incident on Delta Flight at Houston Hobby Airport
A disturbance caused by a passenger on a Delta Air Lines flight departing from Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport on Wednesday morning led to the flight’s return to the gate, but no criminal charges will be filed against the individual. Authorities stated the decision came after a mental health evaluation was conducted.
Incident Details
Delta Flight 2557, bound for Atlanta, departed Hobby Airport around 5:25 a.m. With 85 passengers and five crew members. Shortly after takeoff, a passenger began exhibiting erratic behavior, prompting fellow passengers to restrain him. The Boeing 717 subsequently returned to Hobby Airport, landing at Gate 32, where police were waiting to take the passenger into custody. KHOU 11 reported the incident.
Passenger Accounts
Bryan Escobedo, a Houston military veteran and Purple Heart recipient, witnessed the event and described hearing screaming and seeing distressed flight attendants. He stated the man lunged toward the front of the aircraft and that he intervened to help restrain him. “I jumped on him to start pulling him back,” Escobedo said. “I ripped his shirt off — I didn’t mean to do that — but I was trying to get a hold of him.”
Another passenger, Josh Lemastus, told KHOU 11’s sister station 11Alive that he was physically assaulted during the incident. “I’m just sitting there, and a guy walks aggressively by me and aggressively back, and he bumps into my shoulder and starts wailing on my head,” Lemastus said. “He punched me three times and then walked back and then started attacking another gentleman behind me.” Lemastus also noted the man’s behavior suggested a possible mental health episode, stating he was “screaming at the guy behind me, and kind of like in tongues.”
Delta’s Response
Delta Airlines released a statement emphasizing the safety of its customers and crew as its top priority. The airline confirmed the passenger exhibited “unruly and unlawful behavior toward other customers” but did not attempt to breach the cockpit. ABC News reported Delta apologized to customers for the experience and the resulting travel delay.
Investigation and Outcome
Houston police detained the passenger, but ultimately decided not to pursue criminal charges. The decision followed a mental health evaluation. KHOU 11 confirmed this information.
