Denmark’s Automotive Market Electrified: BEVs Dominate Modern Registrations
Denmark is experiencing a rapid shift towards electric vehicles, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for a significant majority of new car registrations. Recent data indicates a surge in BEV adoption, driven by consumer demand, government incentives, and an evolving automotive landscape.
February 2026 Registration Data
According to Mobility Denmark, citing data from Bilstatistik.dk, a total of 12,802 new passenger cars were registered in Denmark in February 2026. Of these, 9,736 were battery-electric vehicles, while 2,197 new registrations were accounted for by other powertrain types.
Market Share and Consumer Preferences
Across all customer groups, battery-electric cars achieved a market share of 81.6 percent. Notably, among private buyers, the share was even higher at 94.4 percent, indicating that almost all newly registered passenger cars in this segment were fully electric. Mobility Denmark attributes this trend to “both consumer demand for more environmentally friendly vehicles and political support for transitioning the vehicle fleet to electric drive.”
A Mass Market Transition
“The popularity of electric cars has continued to grow to such an extent by 2026 that we have reached a new level of electrification in the automotive market. The electric car has evolved from a niche product to a vehicle for the mass market, and the overwhelming majority of consumers now choose a battery-electric car when they need a new vehicle,” said Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark.
Government Support and Future Outlook
The continued growth is similarly supported by the maintenance of reduced registration tax for electric cars in 2026. Rørvig emphasized, “The future design of the regulatory framework will be crucial for further development.”
Top-Selling Models
The best-selling model in February was the Toyota bZ4X with 2,112 new registrations. It was followed by the Škoda Elroq (1,243), Volkswagen ID.4 (1,163), Škoda Enyaq (658), and Audi Q4 e-tron (645).
SUV Dominance with Emerging Trends
SUVs continue to dominate the Danish market, with eight of the ten most registered models in February being SUVs, including the Tesla Model Y (458), Xpeng G6 (454) and BMW iX1 (318). The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric (262) and Citroën ë-C3 (223) were the only non-SUV models among the top ten, with the Citroën adopting SUV-inspired design elements.
Comparison with Norway and the Rise of Chinese Manufacturers
With battery-electric vehicles accounting for over four-fifths of new registrations, Denmark is increasingly mirroring the development in Norway, where BEVs reached a 98 percent share of new car sales in February. The Toyota bZ4X, Denmark’s top-selling model, is also popular in Norway, ranking second, though behind the Tesla Model Y.
Chinese manufacturers are also gaining traction. Xpeng has established itself as a leading Chinese OEM in both countries, with the Xpeng G6 ranking among the top ten models in Denmark and the Xpeng G9 achieving a comparable position in Norway.
