Malte Setkov Reflects on Olympic Experience and Future Ambitions

Denmark’s Olympic journey at the Milano Cortina 2026 games concluded after a hard-fought round of 16 match against the Czech Republic, ending with a 2-3 defeat. Danish defenseman Malte Setkov expressed a mix of frustration and reflection following the game.

A Different Challenge

“It is frustrating. Heavy,” Setkov stated after the match, acknowledging the disappointment of the loss. The game was closely contested, with Alexander True and Nick Olesen scoring for Denmark.

The Olympic experience represented a significant shift in competition for Setkov, who has spent the majority of his recent career in leagues closer to home. He played for Malmö Redhawks between 2014 and 2021, followed by a season with AIK IF in the Allsvenskan, before returning to Denmark.

Career Path and Olympic Selection

Currently playing for Rødovre Mighty Bulls of the Metal Ligaen, Setkov earned his place on the Danish Olympic squad through a strong performance in a preparatory camp. The step up in competition, facing players from the NHL, was a considerable one.

Looking Ahead

Despite the Olympic defeat, Setkov remains focused on his career. “I play in the mother club and have ambitions there. But I have ambitions myself as well,” he said. He acknowledged that he will be considering his options over the summer.

When asked about a potential return to Sweden, Setkov remained noncommittal. “Don’t recognize. It depends on many things. It depends on where it is. You know how it is when you have to choose a team, there are many things that come into play. A girl to move in with and all that. So there are several things that I have to think about over the summer.”

Setkov’s performance at the Olympics has undoubtedly raised his profile and opened up potential opportunities for the future.
