A Career Spanning Decades
Condrey began his professional wrestling career in 1973, working in various territories across the country. He first gained prominence as part of the Midnight Express in Southeast Championship Wrestling in 1980, teaming with Randy Rose. Norvell Austin later joined the group in 1981, forming a successful iteration of the team that lasted until 1983.
The Iconic Midnight Express with Eaton and Cornette
In 1983, Condrey joined forces with Bobby Eaton and manager Jim Cornette, creating the Midnight Express team most fans remember today. This trio achieved significant success in Mid-South Wrestling, engaging in a memorable and often brutal feud with “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express” (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson). This rivalry extended to Jim Crockett Promotions in 1985, captivating audiences across multiple territories.
Turbulent Departures and Reunions
Condrey’s time with Eaton and Cornette wasn’t without its challenges. He abruptly left Jim Crockett Promotions in 1987. He later reunited with Randy Rose in the American Wrestling Association (AWA) under the management of Paul E. Dangerously (Paul Heyman). This version of the Midnight Express engaged in a heated feud with Eaton, Lane, and Cornette after attacking them in a memorable angle.
Later Career and Legacy
Following a dispute with Crockett and booker George Scott, Condrey and Rose were involved in a “loser leaves town” match, which led to Condrey’s departure from the promotion. He continued wrestling in the Continental promotion until his retirement in 1990. Condrey remained a respected figure in the wrestling community, with FTR’s Dax Harwood initiating a GoFundMe campaign to help cover his funeral expenses.
