Does Your body Really Need a Detox?
A new year frequently enough brings good intentions. A popular one, especially after the holidays,is a detox for body and mind. But does actively ‘detoxing’ your body actually make sense? “Unfortunately, there’s little science behind most trendy nutritional advice and health claims,” experts say.
From five-day juice cleanses to clean eating,or even drinking lemon water and vinegar every morning for a month, there are plenty of home remedies promising to reset your body. Super powders and purifying capsules with the same promises are everywhere. Sounds too good to be true? It is.
Health expert and author of Everything You Need to Know About Food, True Mouha, explains: “Very few of these supplements have a scientific basis. Most simply play on our desire for control, and our sensitivity to hype. We’ve known how to eat healthily for a long time, but advice that actually works – like drinking enough water and eating enough fiber – sounds boring. People don’t tolerate boredom well. Instead of sticking to the basics, we jump on the bandwagon of trendy advice that promises control and a shortcut to a young, healthy body.” (laughs)
We have known for a long time how to eat healthily. Though, the standard advice doesn’t sound very ‘sexy’, and so we keep being tempted by hip new nutritional advice.
