Is Your Older Adult Patient Missing Medications? A New Tool Can Help

Chronic diseases are a significant global health burden, particularly for the growing older adult population. Effective management often relies on consistent medication adherence, but ensuring older adults take their medications as prescribed can be a challenge.

Many older adults struggle with medication adherence, leading to poorer health outcomes and increased healthcare costs. This is due to various factors like forgetfulness, complex medication regimens, and concerns about side effects. Screening for adherence is crucial to identify those needing additional support.

The Therapeutic Adherence Scale: A New Solution

Researchers have developed the Therapeutic Adherence Scale (TAS), a brief and easy-to-use self-report measure designed to capture intentional and unintentional nonadherence in community-dwelling older adults managing chronic diseases.

This four-item tool was created through a rigorous three-phase process:

  • Content Validity Assessment: Experts reviewed existing literature and selected nine candidate items.
  • Psychometric Testing: The final four items were tested on a sample of 269 older adults for validity, reliability, and internal consistency.

The TAS demonstrated strong psychometric properties:

  • Structural Validity: Results confirmed a sound factor structure.
  • Convergent Validity: Scores correlated with existing measures of loneliness.
  • Known Groups Validity: Those reporting loneliness had higher TAS scores.
  • Internal Consistency: Cronbach’s alpha and split-half reliability coefficients were satisfactory.

Benefits of the TAS

The TAS offers several advantages for healthcare professionals and researchers:

  • Brief and Simple:
