Diarmuid Healy Injury Blow for Cork Hurling Ahead of Crucial Munster Championship

Cork forward Diarmuid Healy is facing a minimum of five weeks on the sidelines due to a quad injury, manager Ben O’Connor confirmed on Monday night.

The injury, sustained last month, will require a second scan this week to determine the full extent of the damage and a more precise recovery timeline.

Impact on League and Championship Schedule

This injury timeline rules Healy out of the Allianz Hurling League final and Cork’s opening two Munster round-robin games against Tipperary and Limerick. His availability for the Round 3 trip to Waterford on May 9 remains uncertain.

Healy featured in Cork’s early League wins against Waterford and Tipperary but was absent for the victory over Kilkenny, the defeat to Limerick, and the recent win against Offaly.

Manager’s Comments and Healy’s Situation

“He’s up for a scan some day this week so hopefully he’ll get good news out of that, but he looks under pressure at the moment anyway,” O’Connor stated at the League final media briefing. “He’ll have another four or five weeks ahead of him at least, but we won’t know more until he’s scanned.”

O’Connor also noted the difficulty of the injury for Healy, who had experienced a breakthrough season in 2024. “When he hurt it, he didn’t know how bad it was because he was never injured before. It’s the first time that he is sitting out and watching fellas training, so it is not nice for him. It is just all part of it. The older he gets, he’ll figure out how to pass his time. It is just unfortunate for him, especially after a breakthrough season last year. Getting to a League final, he is going to lose out on that now, as well.”

Other Injury Concerns for Cork

Brian Roche is currently nursing an ankle injury, even as his brother, Eoin, sustained a knock during a club match for Bride Rovers against Na Piarsaigh.

Alan Connolly picked up a knock against Offaly, but initial reports indicate he has a clean bill of health.

Looking Ahead to the League Final and Beyond

Despite the injury setbacks, Cork is preparing to compete for the League title in their upcoming match against Limerick. O’Connor expressed his team’s determination, recalling Cork’s previous League win in 1998 and their recent success last year.

“We are delighted [to get to the final]. I was saying to the boys earlier that I was over watching in Thurles in 1998 when we won the League, and we didn’t win it again until last year. The goal at the start of the year was to get to the final. We are after getting to the final and now we want to win it.”
