Des Moines University to Host Open House for New Regional Simulation Center

Des Moines University (DMU) will host a public open house for the Des Moines University Regional Simulation Center from 3-6 p.m. On Thursday, March 5, 2026. The event will allow the public to explore the state-of-the-art facility designed to strengthen health care education, training, and workforce development across Central Iowa.

A Collaborative Investment in Healthcare Education

The regional simulation center, located in Ryan Hall within the DMU32 Health and Business Complex at 3200 Grand Ave., was made possible through collaboration and a multi-million dollar investment from the Polk County Board of Supervisors [1]. Partners also include Des Moines Area Community College, Des Moines Public Schools, and Mercy College of Health Sciences [1].

What to Expect at the Open House

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in guided tours and live demonstrations utilizing high-fidelity manikins. They will also be able to meet the professionals who will be leading training sessions at the center [1].

The Importance of Simulation in Healthcare

“The DMU Regional Simulation Center is about giving people the chance to practice critical skills, decision-making and teamwork before they face those situations in real life. It allows learners to make mistakes safely, to train together across disciplines and to build confidence in environments that look and feel like the real world,” says Angela L. Walker Franklin, PhD, president and CEO of DMU [1]. The center aims to provide a safe and realistic environment for healthcare professionals and students to hone their skills.

Training for a Range of Professionals

The Des Moines University Regional Simulation Center at DMU32 is designed to support a wide range of learners, from high school students exploring healthcare careers to seasoned EMTs looking to sharpen their response times [2]. The facility focuses on real-world scenarios, competency training, and interdisciplinary teamwork [1].

DMU32: A Hub for Health and Learning

The simulation center is part of the larger DMU32 Health and Business Complex, which represents a revitalization of the former Des Moines University campus [3]. The complex also houses the Des Moines University Clinic and serves as the official practice facility for the Iowa Wolves [3].
