Dolores Huerta Rises Above Downtown in New Robert Vargas Mural
Acclaimed Los Angeles muralist Robert Vargas has officially completed the fifth and final installment of his powerful “We Are Human” series, unveiling a towering tribute to civil rights icon Dolores Huerta in downtown Los Angeles. The mural, titled “Walking into History,” was revealed on April 12, 2026, coinciding with Huerta’s 96th birthday and serving as a vibrant testament to her enduring legacy in the fight for labor rights, racial equity, and social justice.
Spanning seven stories on the exterior rear wall of the Barclay Hotel, the large-scale artwork captures Huerta’s likeness with striking detail, embodying the courage, tenacity, and unrelenting hope she has demonstrated throughout her decades of activism. As co-founder of the United Farm Workers union, Huerta has been a driving force in advancing the rights of farmworkers and marginalized communities across the United States.
Vargas described the mural as more than just an image—it is a statement of resilience, history, and community. The piece draws direct inspiration from Huerta’s famous call to action: “Walk the street with us into history. Get off the sidewalk,” a message that continues to inspire generations to engage in social change.
The unveiling ceremony took place at 2 p.m. PST and was attended by local officials, community leaders, civil rights advocates, and members of the public. The project, developed in collaboration with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, marks the culmination of Vargas’ year-long “We Are Human” series, which has highlighted influential figures and themes reflecting the diversity, resilience, and cultural fabric of Los Angeles.
By centering Huerta’s image in the heart of downtown LA, Vargas’ mural not only honors a pivotal figure in American civil rights history but also reinforces the ongoing relevance of her message in today’s social justice movements.
