A Celebration of Life and Music
The funeral mass, held at St. Patrick and St. Cuana Church in Kilcoona, began with a poignant rendition of Keane’s signature song, “Never be the Sun.” Parish Priest Father Dixy Faber highlighted Keane’s ability to bring “joy and comfort to the hearts of so many” through her music. He emphasized the strong community support she received, which enabled her to share her gift with the world.

High-Profile Attendees
The funeral drew mourners from all walks of life, including President Catherine Connolly, former President Michael D. Higgins, and Commandant Joseph Glennon, representing the Taoiseach. Michael D. Higgins, a long-time friend of Keane’s, has been a consistent supporter of the arts, particularly in the Galway area, for over 30 years, according to Keane’s brother, Matt.
Tributes and Reflections
Matt Keane spoke on behalf of the family, expressing gratitude for President Connolly’s attendance and acknowledging the former president’s support for his sister. He described Keane as a beloved sister whose absence would leave a “massive gap” in their lives.
Father Gannon, a friend of the Keane family, described Dolores as “one of the most humble people that walked this earth,” noting that her fame never altered her character. He also highlighted her deep connection to her home and the traditions she safeguarded.
A Lasting Legacy
Following the mass, Dolores Keane was laid to rest in Donaghpatrick cemetery. Her music, deeply rooted in Irish tradition, has resonated with audiences worldwide, earning her the title of “the queen of the soul of Ireland.” President Connolly, in a statement released on the President of Ireland website, described Keane as “one of the great voices of this island, and of the world,” praising her honesty and the way she poured her entire self into her songs.
