Italy Mourns Two-Year-Old Domenico Caliendo After Heart Transplant Complications
Nola, Italy – The nation is in mourning following the death of Domenico Caliendo, a two-year-old boy who died at Monaldi Hospital in Naples after receiving a heart transplant. An autopsy conducted on March 3, 2026, at the Second Polyclinic of Naples revealed no evidence of injury to the heart during the explantation process. According to medical examiner Luca Scognamiglio, consultant to the Caliendo family, initial findings showed “no injuries to the heart during the explantation phase, in particular there does not appear to be the cut on the ventricle that some sources have spoken of” Il Mattino. The investigation is ongoing, with further evaluations of pathological samples scheduled for April 28th, and a return to court on September 11th.

Restrictions at the Funeral
To maintain a respectful atmosphere, the Diocese of Nola requested that attendees refrain from using cell phones, cameras, or video cameras inside the cathedral before, during, or after the Eucharistic celebration Il Mattino.
