Draper Stuns Djokovic at Indian Wells, Alcaraz and Swiatek Advance
Indian Wells, CA – Jack Draper delivered a significant upset at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday, defeating five-time champion Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in the fourth round. The victory propels the defending champion Draper into the quarterfinals, where he will face Daniil Medvedev.
Draper Overcomes Djokovic in Thrilling Match
The 24-year-old Draper, returning from an eight-month absence due to an arm injury, showcased resilience and determination to overcome the Serbian legend. Despite dropping the first set, Draper battled back, forcing a decisive tiebreak in the third set which he ultimately won 7-5.
“I still don’t feel like I’m playing anywhere near the way I desire to play,” Draper said, as reported by ESPN. “But I came out here and I won this match through determination.”
The match featured extended rallies, including a breathtaking 26-shot exchange in the opening game of the deciding set, which earned a standing ovation from the crowd. The ATP Tour highlighted the physical battle between the two players.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, had previously won the Indian Wells title in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016. He recently came close to securing his 11th Australian Open title, falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the final.
Alcaraz Continues Dominant Run
World number one Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive form at Indian Wells, defeating Casper Ruud 6-1, 7-6(2). Alcaraz dominated the first set, breaking Ruud’s serve three times in just 37 minutes. He secured his 15th consecutive win of the season and reached the quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive time.
Alcaraz will next face 2021 champion Cameron Norrie, who defeated Rinki Hijikata 6-4, 6-2.
Swiatek and Pegula Advance in Women’s Draw
In the women’s competition, world number two Iga Swiatek achieved a commanding victory over Karolina Muchova, winning 6-2, 6-0. Swiatek secured her fifth win against Muchova, winning 10 consecutive games.
American fifth seed Jessica Pegula also advanced, defeating Belinda Bencic 6-3, 7-6(5), marking her first win against the Swiss player in five matches.
Bhambri Reaches Doubles Semi-Finals
India’s Yuki Bhambri, partnering with Sweden’s Goran Goransson, reached the men’s doubles semi-finals with a straight-sets win over Alexander Erler and Andrea Vavassouri 6-3, 7-6. This marks Bhambri’s first semi-final appearance at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. They will face Arthur Rinderknecht and Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals on Friday.
