Draper Upsets Djokovic at Indian Wells, Faces Medvedev in Quarterfinals
Jack Draper continued his impressive run at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating Novak Djokovic in a thrilling three-set match on Wednesday night. The defending champion rallied to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), marking a significant victory for the young British player and ending Djokovic’s hopes for a sixth Indian Wells title.
Draper’s Comeback Victory
The 24-year-old Draper, returning to form after an eight-month absence due to an arm injury, showcased remarkable determination to overcome the five-time champion. Djokovic, seeded third, took the first set 6-4, but Draper fought back, securing the second set 6-4. The deciding set went to a tiebreaker, where Draper prevailed 7-5.
Djokovic’s Disappointment
Despite a strong showing, Djokovic expressed disappointment with his performance. “Obviously, I lost to a great player and it was a remarkably balanced match, but I’m a little disappointed. I would have liked to have played better,” he lamented according to Tennis.com. This loss prevents Djokovic from reaching the quarter-finals at Indian Wells for the first time since winning the tournament in 2016.
Draper’s Road Ahead: Medvedev Awaits
Draper’s victory sets up a quarter-final clash against Daniil Medvedev, who previously defeated Alex Michelsen 6-2, 6-4. Medvedev acknowledged the challenge Draper presents, stating, “I would be surprised if it’s a one-sided match. I think it’s going to be a very, very physical battle where you don’t realize who’s gonna win.” as reported by Tennis.com.
Recent Successes for Draper
Prior to this victory, Draper had already demonstrated his resurgence, winning titles at the Stuttgart Open and the Vienna Open in 2024 according to the Associated Press.
Djokovic’s Grand Slam Legacy
Despite this setback, Novak Djokovic remains a tennis icon, boasting 24 Grand Slam titles. He had previously won the Indian Wells tournament in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016 as reported by the Associated Press. He nearly secured an 11th Australian Open title earlier this year but was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz.
Draper attributed his win to determination and a positive attitude, stating, “I came out here and I won that match through determination.” according to the Associated Press.
