ATP Challenger Tournaments Canceled in UAE Amidst Regional Security Concerns

The ATP Challenger Tour has canceled two tournaments scheduled in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, following security concerns stemming from regional unrest and drone strikes. The decision impacts both the ongoing Fujairah Open and a second tournament planned for the same venue next week, known as Fujairah 2.

Drone Strikes and Player Safety

The cancellation comes after players experienced firsthand the escalating tensions in the region. During qualifying matches at the Fujairah Open, Ukrainian player Vladyslav Orlov reported hearing fighter jets overhead, describing the situation as “not very safe.” Play was initially halted when an oil terminal nearby was struck by debris from a drone attack.

ATP Response and Player Support

The ATP prioritized the safety and wellbeing of players and tournament personnel, leading to the ultimate decision to cancel both events. An ATP spokesperson stated, “Following ongoing security concerns in the region, the ATP Challenger Tour events scheduled in Fujairah this week and next week have been cancelled.”

The ATP initially explored options for player departures, including a charter flight from Muscat, Oman, at a cost of €5,000 (approximately $5,801). Although, the governing body later announced it would fully fund charter flights for all players to assist with their departures. Accommodation and essential needs continue to be covered by the tournament organizers.

Player Reactions and Concerns

The ATP’s initial handling of the situation drew criticism from some players. Finn Bass, a British player, expressed disbelief that the event was allowed to proceed initially, calling it “madness.” Some players questioned the lack of a comprehensive crisis management plan on the ground.

Despite some concerns, many players acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. One player, who wished to remain anonymous, praised the ATP representatives on-site, Arnaud Brugues and Hans-Juergen Ochs, for their efforts in managing the crisis and supporting the 44 individuals involved.

Regional Context and Escalation

The security concerns arose amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, with the UAE coming under attack by Iranian missiles following US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Explosions were reported in Dubai, further heightening anxieties among players, and officials.

Departure of Players

As of March 4, 2026, the vast majority of players who were in Dubai had successfully departed on commercial flights. The ATP continues to work closely with local authorities and tournament organizers to ensure the safe departure of all remaining players and support staff.
