Dublin Airport’s Icon Saying Farewell: Spiral Ramps Headed for Demolition
Dublin Airport is set for a significant transformation as Terminal 1 bids farewell to its iconic spiral parking ramps. These concrete structures, a symbol of the terminal’s pioneering design since its opening in 1972, will soon be demolished to pave the way for a modernized and more sustainable future.
While the ramps initially embodied the terminal’s innovative architectural vision, they ceased to function as intended shortly after their debut due to heightened security concerns during the Troubles. Despite repurposing attempts, their functionality has become obsolete in the increasingly complex landscape of airport operations.
“Due to the proposed internal reorganization of Terminal 1’s upper floors, car access to the parking areas from these ramps is no longer required,” architects involved in the project stated. Moreover, the ramps accommodate only 41 parking spaces, representing an inefficient use of valuable space and contributing to thermal inefficiency.
The demolition of the ramps is a key element of a broader €10 million overhaul approved in 2020. This comprehensive modernization project aims to install a new facade and roof, enhance energy efficiency, and improve passenger flow.
The original Brutalist design of Terminal 1, featuring the spirals as a defining element by architects Leo M. Carroll and Dennis O’Leary & Partners, marked a significant departure for its time. However, over the years, the terminal’s expansion and ever-evolving needs have blurred its original architectural clarity.
This transformation signifies a new chapter for Dublin Airport, prioritizing sustainability and efficient passenger movement.
The new facade, incorporating glass and solid panels, not only promises a modern aesthetic but also a significant energy upgrade, boosting the terminal’s BER rating from F to B3 – exceeding current energy guidelines by 25%.
The removal of the concrete fins and the implementation of LED lighting and sustainable cleaning agents further underscore the commitment to environmental responsibility.
As construction begins, the demolition of these iconic ramps will undoubtedly evoke nostalgia for those who remember Terminal 1 in its prime.
