East Naples Boardwalk Opens, Culminating Two Decades of Vision and Revitalization Efforts

After more than 20 years of planning and dedication, the Bayshore Boardwalk in East Naples, Florida, officially opened on February 26, 2026, connecting Bayshore Drive to Sugden Park. The project, spearheaded by the Bayshore Gateway Triangle Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Advisory Board, represents a significant milestone in the ongoing revitalization of the Bayshore area.

A Long-Awaited Vision Realized

The boardwalk, costing approximately $3 million, was constructed on a 17-acre tract acquired by the CRA in 2006 and 2008 for nearly $5.4 million (Naples Daily News). Maurice Gutierrez, Chairman of the CRA Advisory Board for over two decades, reflected on the project’s journey, noting the perseverance required to bring the vision to fruition. He credited the late Bill Neal, a key figure in establishing the CRA, for initially envisioning the pedestrian-only boardwalk.

Revitalizing the Bayshore Gateway Triangle

The Bayshore Gateway Triangle Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) was established in 2000 to address blight and stimulate revitalization in the area (Bayshore CRA). Neal’s efforts were instrumental in transforming the area, formerly known as Kelly Road, which had a less reputable past, into the evolving Bayshore Drive corridor it is today (Gulfshore Business).

Boardwalk Features and Community Impact

The completed boardwalk is a 15-foot-wide, 400-foot-long hardscaped pathway with lighting and benches, extending into an elevated 1,350-foot-long section that meanders through native wetlands and uplands. It directly connects Bayshore Drive with Sugden Park, enhancing connectivity and providing a unique recreational space. Collier County Commissioner Dan Kowal anticipates the boardwalk will draw increased attention to Sugden Park, highlighting its existing amenities like the lake, beach, and sailing center (Naples Daily News).

Future Development and Community Focus

The CRA intends to solicit proposals for development on nearby land it owns, prioritizing projects that benefit the community. Gutierrez emphasized the CRA’s commitment to ensuring that any future development complements the boardwalk and contributes positively to the area. The boardwalk is seen as a signature project alongside Metropolitan Naples, a mixed-utilize high-rise development off Davis Boulevard, which is nearing completion.

Funding and Maintenance

The boardwalk was entirely funded by the CRA, utilizing property tax revenue captured within the redevelopment area. Ongoing maintenance will be covered by the Bayshore Beautification Municipal Service Taxing Unit (MSTU), funded through a special tax assessment on property owners within its boundaries.

A Legacy of Vision and Collaboration

Gutierrez expressed hope that the boardwalk would one day be named after Bill Neal, recognizing his foundational role in the project and the broader revitalization of Bayshore. The opening of the boardwalk marks not only the completion of a 20-year project but also a renewed commitment to thoughtful redevelopment and community enhancement in East Naples.
