NC Nurses: Leading the Way Through NCONL

The North Carolina Organization of Nurse Leaders (NCONL) isn’t just an organization – it’s a driving force behind the advancement of nursing within the state. Through a commitment to professional development, research, and advocacy, NCONL empowers nurses to take on leadership roles, shaping healthcare policy and driving positive change. Organizations like ECU Health recognize the immense value of NCONL and actively encourage their nurses to participate.

ECU Health nurses Laura Respess and Dawn Tetterton embody this commitment. Respess recently completed her term as District VI representative – one of the largest in North Carolina. During her six years of service, she built bridges within the district, fostering communication and engagement among members. Respess organized quarterly meetings, planned educational sessions, coordinated event contributions, and encouraged members to share their expertise at the annual NCONL conference.

"Being a representative,” Respess explained, “comes with the benefit of staying informed about statewide developments and sharing best practices. You gain a real understanding of legislative matters from the viewpoint of nursing and how our profession is represented in the legislature."

Tetterton, who has now taken the reins as District VI representative, understands the crucial role NCONL plays in showcasing the exceptional work being done at ECU Health. "Through NCONL," Tetterton stated, "members can showcase the excellent work being done at our organization. We submit several posters and abstracts annually, and have had numerous winners chosen for podium presentations to share nursing best practices they’ve developed."

NCONL’s mission extends far beyond individual members. The organization actively seeks to expand its reach and influence, ensuring that nurses across North Carolina have access to resources, support, and opportunities for growth. By fostering collaboration and sharing best practices, NCONL is building a future where nursing leadership thrives.

Respess sees diversification as key to this growth. "It’s vital to reach out to nursing leaders in ambulatory care and health departments across the state," she emphasized, recognizing that these sectors "play a meaningful role in our overall mission."

As NCONL evolves, it remains committed to empowering nurses, promoting excellence, and advocating for quality patient care. Organizations like ECU Health continue to play an essential role in this mission, partnering with NCONL to elevate nursing leadership and advance the profession as a whole.
