Buenos Aires Braces for Scorching Weather as Power Grid Strains Under Extreme Heat
Buenos Aires, Argentina – As a relentless heat wave grips the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), residents are facing extreme temperatures reaching a sizzling 37°C today.
This unprecedented heat wave has sent shockwaves through the region, exposing the vulnerability of the electricity grid, which is struggling to keep pace with surging demand. Thousands of households are grappling with power outages, impacting daily life in the capital and surrounding suburbs.
According to the National Electricity Regulatory Agency (ENRE), as of 9:30 am local time, a staggering 27,921 customers of EDESUR, the primary electricity provider for the Federal Capital and southern suburbs, were without power. The hardest hit areas reported significant disruptions in include Lomas de Zamora, Lanús, Esteban Echeverría, Quilmes, and Avellaneda.
EDENOR, responsible for electricity distribution in other parts of the AMBA, reported significantly fewer outages, with only 712 customers affected, primarily in Pilar, La Matanza, Moreno, and San Isidro.
The strain on the electricity system is immense. The Wholesale Electricity Market Management Company (CAMMESA) has issued a stern warning, predicting peak demand to reach 29,303 megawatts (Mw) at 3 p.m. today. This crucial metric is nearing the historical record of 29,652 Mw set on February 1, 2024. Wednesday’s peak demand had been 26,980 Mw, highlighting the dramatic increase associated with the extreme temperatures.
Staying Informed and Safe
Facing widespread outages in the midst of a heat wave, the ENRE is urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
The ENRE’s website provides a comprehensive
interactive outage map (https://www.enre.gov.ar/mapacortes/index.html) which gives real-time updates on affected areas, the cause of outages, and estimated restoration times. It also allows customers to directly contact their electricity distributor — Edesur or Edenor — for specific information about their location.
The ENRE emphasizes the importance of taking steps to stay safe during this extreme weather event:
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
- Minimize Sun Exposure: Limit your time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day.
- Energy Efficiency: Utilize energy-efficient appliances and avoid unnecessary energy consumption.
While the current heat wave presents a significant challenge for the region’s infrastructure, the ENRE and utility companies are working tirelessly to restore power and ensure that essential services remain operational.
This event serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust and resilient infrastructure, particularly in the face of increasing temperatures due to climate change. Long-term solutions will require significant investment in grid modernization and the exploration of renewable energy sources to ensure the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply for generations to come.
