Egypt allocates EGP 3.135 million in Support for Irregular workers

Egypt’s Ministry of Labor has approved the disbursement of EGP 3.135 million (approximately $100,000 USD) to provide crucial social, healthcare, and accident compensation to 443 irregular workers across 23 governorates. This initiative underscores the goverment’s commitment to bolstering social protection for vulnerable populations.

Breakdown of the Support Package

The allocated funds are distributed across several key areas of assistance:

  • Social and Healthcare Assistance (EGP 1.759 million): This portion benefits 264 workers and covers essential needs such as marriage grants, childbirth support, bereavement assistance, and financial aid for both major and minor surgeries.
  • Accident Compensation (EGP 1.22 million): Following a tragic factory fire in the Gharbia governorate, this funding provides support to the families of six workers who lost their lives and to one worker who sustained injuries. Families of the deceased will receive EGP 200,000 each, while the injured worker will receive EGP 20,000.
  • Healthcare Expenses (EGP 156,140): A total of 172 workers across five governorates will benefit from coverage of medical expenses, including examinations, treatments, laboratory tests, and diagnostic scans.

Government Commitment to social Protection

Minister of Labour Mohamed Gibran affirmed the ministry’s dedication to expanding social protection programs for irregular workers nationwide. This expansion aligns with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s directives to support vulnerable groups and enhance social stability throughout Egypt.The ministry aims to provide a safety net for those working in the informal sector, ensuring access to essential support services during times of need.

This initiative represents a important step towards strengthening social welfare and providing a measure of security for Egypt’s irregular workforce.
