Eleanor Crawford Brown Remembered: Wilmington Community Leader Passes at 91

Eleanor Crawford Brown, a beloved figure in Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on April 15, 2026, at the age of 91. Her life was marked by deep community involvement, a passion for history and the arts, and enduring dedication to family and friends.

Born in 1934 in Memphis, Tennessee, Eleanor graduated from Central High School and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She was an avid competitive tennis and bridge player, once selected by a professional instructor to compete in a pro-am bridge match—a moment she fondly recalled with humor, noting she was “the ‘am’.”

Her civic engagement included active membership in the Junior League of Wilmington, the Wilmington Country Club, and the National Society of the Colonial Dames. She was also a devoted member of Christ Church, where her faith and service were central to her life.

Eleanor’s scholarly interests led her to serve as a guide at Winterthur Museum, where she developed specialized knowledge in 18th-century export porcelain, lacquered furniture, and hand-painted Chinese wallpaper. Her work contributed to public understanding of early Chinese trade and decorative arts.

She found joy in Camp Tockwogh Family Week, reciting poetry, taking long walks on the beach, celebrating extravagant Christmases, and sharing life with her beloved family dogs. Above all, Eleanor cherished time spent with family and friends.

She is survived by her children: James L. Patton Jr. (Kathleen Patton) of Wilmington; Hugh C. Patton (Lilly Patton) of Brooklyn, Novel York; and Eleanor Stuart Patton (Kevin Kinsella) of San Francisco, California. Her grandchildren—Kelly Klein (Ricky Klein), Diana Patton-LoveCooksey (Katie Patton-LoveCooksey), and Vivienne Patton—and great-grandchildren, Nora and Erik Klein, were a source of enduring joy.

Eleanor is also survived by her stepchildren, Catherine B. Sloan (Bob Sloan) of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and John P. W. Brown VI of Landrum, South Carolina, from her marriage to the late John P. W. Brown III.

The family expressed gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the nurses and staff at Stonegates Health Center during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, reflecting her family’s commitment to meaningful causes.

Eleanor Crawford Brown’s legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched—through her intellect, warmth, humor, and unwavering kindness. She will be remembered not only for her accomplishments but for the grace with which she lived each day.
