Bulgarian Government in “Survival Regime,” Professor Claims

According to Professor Daniel Valchev,Dean of the Faculty of Law at sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and former deputy prime minister, the current Bulgarian government is operating in a “survival regime” and lacks the capacity for proactive politics.

“No government in the survival regime can do anything who knows what,” Valchev stated in an interview with the BNR. He acknowledged the state isn’t in as dire a condition as it initially appears, but emphasized its limitations.

Valchev predicts increasing pressure for early elections, noting that even a stable majority can be destabilized by expectations for change. He drew parallels to historical political tensions in Bulgaria, referencing President Rumen Radev‘s recent statements about “Deribes and political brokers” and the internal seditions during the Unification period.

He believes the country is already effectively in an election campaign, with political parties focused on maintaining their positions rather than unifying around crucial dates.

“Because we do not know how to unite even on such important dates, we are at least united, we use every occasion to confirm our current, it is usually a transitional political position,” Valchev explained.

He asserts the primary goal of the government at the start of the political season is to avoid new elections, indicating a widespread “survival mode” among parliamentary parties.
