Dublin Gardaí Crack Down on Illegal Electric Scooters and Mopeds

Dublin City saw a significant crackdown this week as Gardaí seized 41 electric scooters and mopeds. Operating across various locations, law enforcement officials targeted vehicles involved in various offenses outlined by the revised Road Traffic and Roads Act.

Offenses included exceeding designated speed limits, surpassing allowable power output, and unregistered/uninsured throttle-assisted e-mopeds. A total of 33 e-mopeds and eight e-scooters were confiscated throughout the operation.

“While e-scooters and e-mopeds are becoming increasingly popular amongst commuters, it’s crucial that those used on our roads are properly regulated and safe,” stated the Gardaí in a release. “Always ensure that your chosen mode of transportation adheres to the law so that all road users, including yourself, can travel safely.”

New E-Scooter Regulations Introduced This Year

The crackdown comes amid new regulations permitting the use of e-scooters in public spaces, enforced earlier this year. Key regulations include:

  • A speed limit of 20km per hour
  • Strict requirements for braking systems and lighting
  • Prohibition on carrying more than one person
  • Restrictions against use by individuals under the age of 16
  • No seats are permitted on e-scooters
  • Vehicles must be safe, roadworthy, and not pose any danger or inconvenience to themselves or other road users.

Stay Safe & Ride Responsibly

This recent crackdown serves as a reminder that responsible e-scooter usage is paramount. It’s crucial to follow all regulations and prioritize the safety of yourself and everyone sharing the road.
