Elon Musk’s Boring Company Selects Dallas for Innovative Tunnel Project

A Southern Dallas development, the University Hills Project, has been selected by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company to receive an innovative, mile-long tunnel. The tunnel will connect the $1 billion University Hills development to a nearby DART station at the University of North Texas at Dallas, aiming to improve connectivity and access to transit for the surrounding community.

The University Hills project was one of three winners chosen from nearly 500 proposals submitted to The Boring Company’s “Tunnel Vision Challenge,” with Ravens Loop in Baltimore and NOLA Loop in Fresh Orleans as well selected. The announcement was made on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 according to Yahoo News.

The University Hills Development

Hoque Global’s University Hills is a 270-acre development located near East Wheatland Road and South Lancaster Road in Southern Dallas as reported by Dallas Innovates. The project includes plans for 580 homes and a town center. The tunnel is intended to connect the future commercial area of the development to the University of North Texas at Dallas DART Station.

The Boring Company’s Tunnel Vision Challenge

The Boring Company launched the “Tunnel Vision Challenge” in January, seeking proposals for tunnels that could solve real-world problems in innovative ways. The company is offering to build a free tunnel, up to one mile long and 12 feet in inner diameter, to the winning projects as detailed in Dallas Innovates. Potential uses for the tunnels include passenger transport (Loop tunnels), freight transport, pedestrian access, utility corridors, and water conveyance.

Next Steps and Diligence Process

Before construction can initiate, The Boring Company will undertake a diligence process. This includes meetings with elected officials, regulators, community leaders, and business leaders. Experimental borings will also be conducted, along with an investigation into the impact on existing utility and subsurface infrastructure according to CultureMap Dallas. The timeline for groundbreaking and project completion will be determined following this process.

Reactions to the Announcement

Mike Hoque, CEO of Hoque Global, expressed his excitement, stating it was “an honor to be recognized with the City of Dallas as the winning project for The Boring Company’s Tunnel Vision Challenge.” He highlighted the development’s focus on connectivity and growth, and its potential to strengthen access to transit, jobs, and opportunities in Southern Dallas as reported by CultureMap Dallas.

Dr. Warren von Eschenbach, president of the University of North Texas at Dallas, also welcomed the project, stating it would increase access to and from the campus and symbolize the continued growth of Southern Dallas through technology and collaboration as reported by CultureMap Dallas.
