Energumene Returns in Style, Secures Hilly Way Chase Hat-Trick

Energumene, the reigning champion chaser, made a triumphant return to racing on Saturday, claiming a remarkable hat-trick in the Bar One Racing Hilly Way Chase at Cork.

The Willie Mullins-trained 10-year-old, absent for 20 months due to injury, dominated the Grade Two contest, showcasing his exceptional jumping prowess and stamina. Despite a lengthy layoff, Energumene, ridden by Paul Townend, jumped accurately throughout, leading the field from the front.

While Banbridge, ridden by Richie Deegan, gave Energumene a serious challenge, he unfortunately unseated his rider at the final fence, leaving Energumene to cruise to victory. Dinoblue, another stablemate, finished second, followed by Appreciate It and Blue Lord, completing a remarkable 1-2-3-4 finish for Willie Mullins.

“That was a very exuberant display from him,” Mullins commented. “I thought Dinoblue would make more of the running, but Paul said his horse was just looking for fences to jump and wanted to go a better gallop, so he let him on instead of fighting him. I was very happy with how he jumped and he had been doing everything right since he came back in August. Hopefully, he can keep going that way, and it was a nice performance to build on for the season.”

Energumene’s impressive win raises questions about a potential rematch with Shishkin, his rival from their thrilling clash in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot. However, Mullins remained cautious, stating, “He didn’t look like he needed the run, galloped the whole way to the line, and had looked excellent since he came in.”

Meanwhile, Mullins also provided positive news regarding Ferny Hollow, who unfortunately fell in the home straight. Despite the setback, the talented horse emerged unscathed.

Beyond Energumene’s victory, other notable performances included Pray Tell’s triumph in the Singletons Supervalu Stayers Novice Hurdle, Only By Night’s dominant display in the Coolmore NH Sires Order Of St George Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase, and Puturhandstogether’s maiden hurdle success.

The Cork racing action showcased the depth of talent in Irish racing, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.

Stay tuned for more thrilling races and updates from the world of horse racing!
