Épernay Offers Hope for Young Workers with Innovative Housing Project
Épernay, a charming city in the heart of France’s Champagne region, is taking a proactive approach to tackle the critical housing shortage facing young professionals.
A dilapidated senior residence, the former André-Church, is being transformed into a vibrant hub for ambitious young individuals under a project spearheaded by Plurial Novilia, a local non-profit organization. The revitalization effort, backed by the city, the state, and the CAF (Caisse Allocation Familiale), will create 34 fully furnished studios, each designed for comfortable living and featuring modern amenities.
“We identified a significant gap in the housing market for young people in Épernay,” explains Nicolas Bourgeois, deputy director of relationships with customers at Plurial Novilia. “The rising cost of private rent and lack of suitable structures left many talented young people struggling to find affordable and comfortable accommodation.” This project aims to bridge that gap, offering a lifeline to young professionals eager to contribute to Épernay’s thriving economy.
The statistics paint a clear picture. Épernay’s economy is booming, driven by renowned viticulture, burgeoning tourism, and a growing hospitality and catering sector. This creates ample job opportunities, but the lack of affordable housing is hindering the full potential of these growth sectors.
The André-Church project offers a unique solution. Residents will benefit from personalized housing aid (APL) and enjoy overwhelmingly discounted rents, ranging from €60 to €80 per month—a stark contrast to the soaring prices prevalent in the private market. Moreover, two dedicated social workers will be on-hand to offer personalized support, assisting with job searching, navigating the region’s vibrant job market, and building a solid foundation for long-term financial independence.
This 24-month program aims to empower young individuals to transition into stable, long-term housing arrangements, ensuring their continued contribution to Épernay’s thriving community.
Beyond providing essential housing, the project breathes new life into a neglected building, contributing to the revitalization of Épernay’s urban landscape.
