Equal AI Raises $30M for AI-Powered Call-Screening App in India

Equal AI, an Indian startup developing an AI assistant to screen calls and extract context, has secured $30 million in Series B funding, according to a company announcement. The round, led by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital, marks a significant milestone for the company as it expands its capabilities in a market overwhelmed by unsolicited calls.

How Equal AI’s Call-Screening App Works

Equal AI’s app, available on Android, uses speech recognition and natural language processing to intercept calls and relay key details to users. When a call comes in, the AI asks the caller for the purpose of the call and provides a summary, such as “Delivery near the door” or “Job interview.” Users can customize responses or review call recordings and transcriptions through the app.

The company claims over 1 million monthly active users and 300,000 daily active users since its launch last year. It supports 10 languages, including regional Indian dialects, to accommodate code-mixing—where users blend multiple languages in a single conversation.

Competition in the Call Screening Market

Equal AI faces competition from established players like Truecaller, which has built a reputation for caller ID services, and tech giants Google and Apple, which offer call-screening features. The startup differentiates itself by focusing on local context, according to Thiago Viana, global co-head at Prosus Ventures.

“Equal AI’s understanding of local context gives it an edge,” Viana said. The company also avoids reliance on messaging platforms like WhatsApp, which has restricted third-party AI bots, by building its own app ecosystem.

Funding Structure and Future Plans

The $30 million Series B round was structured in three tranches, with valuations tied to performance milestones. While Equal AI declined to disclose specific figures, the funding brings its total raised to over $42 million. The company plans to launch an iOS version, introduce proactive features like sending addresses to delivery personnel, and roll out a paid subscription tier.

Equal AI was founded in 2022 by Keshav Reddy, a member of the GVK conglomerate family. Initially a data-sharing platform for financial services, the company pivoted to consumer-facing AI after identifying a gap in handling high volumes of unsolicited calls.

Challenges and Industry Outlook

The call-screening market reflects broader concerns about digital privacy and AI ethics. Equal AI’s approach aligns with growing demand for tools that empower users to control their communication channels. However, regulatory scrutiny of AI-driven services in India remains a potential hurdle.

“If an app excels in niche use cases, it can build user stickiness and expand later,” said Reddy. The startup’s focus on local language support and independent app development positions it to compete with global players while addressing India’s unique digital landscape.
