Divisions in Dutch Football: Eredivisie and Keuken Kampioen Divisie Clash Over Playoff Structure

A growing rift is emerging between the Eredivisie (the top tier of Dutch professional football) and the Keuken Kampioen Divisie (KKD, the second tier) over proposed changes to the promotion/relegation playoff system. The Eredivisie’s desire to protect its teams from relegation is sparking “dissatisfaction and misunderstanding” within the KKD, as clubs in the lower division feel they are being asked to bear the burden of accommodating an increasingly congested UEFA schedule.

The Proposed Changes and the KKD’s Concerns

Currently, the 16th-placed team in the Eredivisie enters the semi-finals of the promotion/relegation playoffs. The Eredivisie now seeks to have that team enter the final directly, reducing their risk of relegation. This proposal stems from concerns about the expanded Champions League, Europa League and Conference League formats, which create a more crowded match calendar.

However, KKD clubs argue that they shouldn’t have to shoulder the consequences of the Eredivisie’s desire for greater security. FC Dordrecht director Hans de Zeeuw expressed frustration, stating, “The Eredivisie wants the benefits of more UEFA football, but not the burdens. The KKD will then have to pay for the negative effects. I don’t understand that. You all play professional football together, right?”

A History of Reversal and Renewed Debate

This isn’t the first time this issue has surfaced. The KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) initially proposed a similar change last year, citing the new Champions League structure. However, following significant criticism, the KNVB reversed its decision, stating it was a temporary measure related to the timing of the World Cup and the necessitate for the Dutch national team to acclimatize.

De Zeeuw revealed that despite assurances that the change was temporary, the Eredivisie is now revisiting the idea, aiming to permanently protect the 16th-placed team. He believes the Eredivisie is primarily motivated by a desire to reduce the chances of relegation for its teams, effectively giving them an easier path to survival.

The Broader Implications

The dispute highlights a fundamental tension between the top and second tiers of Dutch football. KKD clubs feel they are being asked to compromise their competitive integrity to accommodate the interests of the Eredivisie. The debate raises questions about fairness, the distribution of benefits and burdens within the Dutch football system, and the impact of UEFA’s expanded club competitions on the lower leagues.

As of February 27, 2026, the situation remains unresolved, with ongoing discussions expected to determine the future of the promotion/relegation playoff structure in Dutch football.
