Eric Bischoff on Road Dogg’s WWE Exit and Potential AEW Fit
Former WCW executive Eric Bischoff recently discussed Road Dogg’s departure from WWE’s SmackDown creative team, attributing it to a clash of cultures within the company and suggesting a potential opportunity with All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Bischoff’s comments came during an episode of the “83 Weeks” podcast on March 7, 2026, as reported by Ringside News and 411mania.
Road Dogg’s Initial Departure and Bischoff’s Hiring
Bischoff revealed that Road Dogg (Brian James) was initially let go from WWE in 2019, coinciding with Bischoff’s own hiring. “Road Dogg was actually let go in 2019 since I took his spot,” Bischoff explained, adding that his own tenure with the company was brief, lasting only “four or five months.” He noted that Road Dogg was subsequently brought back by Triple H to build his own team.
The Importance of Chemistry in a Creative Team
Bischoff emphasized the critical role of chemistry within a writer’s room. “Creative is as much chemistry as it is talent,” he stated. “You’ve got to have the right people with the right personalities that realize what they’re doing.” He explained that even the most creative ideas can fall flat if they don’t resonate with the team dynamic. 411mania reports Bischoff believes a collaborative energy is essential for success.
A Clash of Cultures at WWE
According to Bischoff, Road Dogg’s “vintage school” approach didn’t align with the increasingly “corporate” culture of WWE. “He’s good, but he’s old school. And what WWE has become is so polar opposite of what Road Dogg’s primary experience in the business has been,” Bischoff said. He contrasted the current environment with the culture that existed during Vince McMahon’s leadership, where individuals like Road Dogg and William Regal could thrive despite differing styles. Bischoff believes Road Dogg struggled to adapt to the “sanitized, ultra corporate environment.”
Potential Opportunity with AEW
Bischoff suggested that if Road Dogg wants to remain involved in the creative side of wrestling, AEW could be a good fit. ITR Wrestling reports Bischoff believes Road Dogg could thrive in a different environment. Whereas acknowledging that AEW operates differently, Bischoff believes Road Dogg’s experience and personality could be valuable to the promotion.
Other Options for Road Dogg
Bischoff also pointed out that Road Dogg could pursue a schedule of appearances and fan events, noting that such opportunities can be lucrative, though potentially demanding in terms of travel. He acknowledged that appearances can be rewarding for someone with Road Dogg’s popularity and reputation.
