Spence Jr.’s Return Raises Concerns Ahead of Tszyu Fight

Tim Tszyu’s upcoming fight against Errol Spence Jr. Is drawing scrutiny, with former world champion Sergio Mora voicing significant concerns about Spence Jr.’s preparation and recent circumstances. The bout, slated for later this year, pits the Australian challenger against a former welterweight kingpin whose return to the ring has been marked by questions.

Spence Jr.’s Road to Recovery and Red Flags

Errol Spence Jr. Hasn’t fought since his defeat to Terence Crawford in 2023, a brutal loss where he was dropped three times before the fight was stopped. Following the defeat, questions arose about his ability to return, given his history of injuries and involvement in two car accidents. Fox Sports Australia reports that Mora has identified several “red flags” surrounding Spence Jr.’s comeback.

A key concern is Spence Jr.’s decision to move forward without his longtime trainer, Derrick James. “Now that I know that Derrick James is not in his corner – the main voice that he’s trusted… I hope that’s not the case, because that’s three red flags, three strikes and you’re out,” Mora stated in an interview with boxing scribe Chris Mannix. He cited Spence Jr.’s inactivity, the physical toll of the Crawford fight, and the absence of James as major warning signs.

Tszyu’s Recent Form and Preparation

Tim Tszyu, although also facing recent challenges, appears to be taking a different approach. After a period where he lost three of four fights following a 24-0 start, Tszyu secured a unanimous decision victory over Anthony Velazquez in December. He is currently training in Miami, Florida, under new coach Pedro Diaz and is scheduled for a “warm-up” fight in late March against an opponent on the same card as Liam Paro’s IBF world title showdown against Lewis Crocker.

Contrasting Approaches to the Fight

Mora believes Tszyu possesses a distinct advantage in punching power. “Tim Tszyu is a harder puncher. I reckon Tim Tszyu is a harder single puncher and I think he takes a better punch – even at this stage.” He also questioned Spence Jr.’s decision to bypass a tune-up fight, suggesting it could indicate overconfidence or a concern about exposing vulnerabilities. “That could be two things,” Mora explained, “Overconfidence on Errol Spence’s side or basically being chinny – knowing that he could probably lose to a lower calibre fighter. And I’m leaning towards the latter on this one.”

Former champion Chris Algieri, who previously fought Spence Jr., echoed the sentiment that Spence Jr. Has a unique approach to fight preparation. “That’s just the way he is,” Algieri told Boxing Today. “He’s Mr I-Don’t-Take-Tune-Ups.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the concerns, Algieri believes Tszyu is a disciplined and dedicated fighter who is focused on making a significant run in the welterweight division. The upcoming fight promises to be a compelling clash between two determined athletes, but Mora’s assessment casts a shadow of doubt over Spence Jr.’s readiness and chances of success.
