Es Devlin’s Screenshare at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb – A Cinematic Installation You Can Take Home
London’s 180 Studios is currently hosting Reverb, a multimedia exhibition exploring the intersection of art and sound, curated by The Vinyl Factory. Among the featured installations is “Screenshare” by acclaimed stage designer Es Devlin, offering a unique and interactive cinematic experience.
A Screen Made of Sketchbooks
“Screenshare,” a new commission by The Vinyl Factory and 180 Studios, constructs a cinema screen from recreations of Devlin’s sketchbooks. Visitors are invited to watch a short film and then take a page from the “screen” with them, effectively becoming part of the artwork.
The Artist’s Process and Inspiration
Devlin describes the sketchbooks as a collection of work spanning 35 years, encompassing drawings of London wildlife, her children, and process sketches related to her design work. “The film is an anthology drawn from installation works made over the past 16 years and the soundtrack is an extract from the Vinyl Factory record we made with Polyphonia last year, An Atlas of Es Devlin,” Devlin explained.
A Continued Collaboration
This isn’t Devlin’s first collaboration with The Vinyl Factory. She previously staged “BlueSkyWhite” as part of the LUX exhibition at 180 Studios in 2021.
Exploring the Intersection of Art and Sound
The Vinyl Factory: Reverb features 17 audio-visual experiences and installations, showcasing the work of artists including Carsten Nicolai, Caterina Barbieri, Stan Douglas, Jeremy Deller, and Cecilia Bengolea. The exhibition also includes Devon Turnbull’s HiFi Listening Room Dream No. 1, a space dedicated to vinyl listening on a custom-built sound system.
