ESPN and Disney Integrate Playback.tv Team After Platform Shutdown

The team behind Playback, a social sports livestreaming platform that ceased operations in December 2025, has joined Disney Entertainment and ESPN. The integration, announced on March 17, 2026, will notice the former Playback employees working within ESPN’s product and technology division, focusing on the development of interactive sports media experiences. NetInfluencer and MickeyBlog reported on the move.

Playback’s History and Shutdown

Launched in 2020, Playback gained traction as a creator-driven platform for live sports watch parties. It enabled users to connect their streaming subscriptions, such as NBA League Pass and MLB.TV, and engage with hosts and fellow fans through text, voice, or video chat although watching games in sync. The platform secured partnerships with the NBA in 2023 and MLB in March 2025, accompanied by $22 million in funding. MickeyBlog details the platform’s innovative approach.

Despite its initial success, Playback shut down in December 2025 due to the complexities of navigating sports broadcast rights and limitations in authenticating access for a wider audience. Founders RJ Halperin and Ari Borensztein cited blackout rules and the fragmented nature of sports streaming as key challenges. They had previously indicated they were exploring options to sell the platform’s technology and team to a larger media company. NetInfluencer highlights the founders’ statement regarding structural challenges.

Future Plans and Collaboration

Following the announcement of the Disney and ESPN partnership, Playback invited former creators interested in future collaboration to connect directly with the team. NetInfluencer reported on this outreach.

Disney and ESPN have clarified that they hired the Playback team after the platform independently decided to shut down, contesting initial framing that suggested an acquisition. Newsbreak provides details on this clarification.
