EU Rejects Claims of ‘Civilizational Erasure’ Amidst Trans-Atlantic Tensions

Munich — European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Sunday dismissed assertions that Europe is facing “civilizational erasure,” responding to criticism leveled by the Trump administration. The exchange occurred at the Munich Security Conference, highlighting ongoing tensions in the trans-Atlantic alliance.

Pushback Against U.S. Criticism

Kallas addressed the conference a day after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a message to European allies, striking a less aggressive tone than Vice President JD Vance’s remarks at the same conference last year. However, Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s intention to reshape the trans-Atlantic relationship and prioritize U.S. Policy objectives.

The U.S. National security strategy, released in December, suggested that economic stagnation in Europe was overshadowed by a “real and more stark prospect of civilizational erasure.” The document cited concerns about Europe’s immigration policies, declining birth rates, restrictions on free speech, suppression of political opposition and a perceived loss of national identity and self-confidence. Rubio’s Perspective and European Resolve
