Europe Heatwave: 191 Million People to Face Temperatures Over 35C

191 Million Europeans Face Critical Heat Thresholds

A massive heatwave is gripping Europe, pushing temperatures to hazardous levels for hundreds of millions of residents. Forecasts indicate that at least 191 million people will endure temperatures of at least 35C this Sunday. Data analyzed by the Austrian NGO Klimadashboard—which cross-references 0300 GMT weather models from the German Meteorological Service (DWD) with 2025 population projections—shows that 381 million people across the continent, excluding Turkey, will see temperatures surpass 30C.

The Epicenter of the Surge

The intensity is concentrated in Central and Eastern Europe. Almost all of Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic are expected to see temperatures rise above 35C on Sunday. Germany remains under severe strain; approximately 42 million people there are expected to face temperatures at or above 35C, particularly in the Berlin area.

The extreme conditions extend across Slovakia, Serbia, Croatia, Italy, Austria, and western Ukraine. In mainland France, where red alerts were expected to be lifted on Sunday evening, roughly 11 million people will be affected.

Limitations of Grid-Scale Forecasting

The Klimadashboard figures rely on a methodology that tracks temperatures at a 6.5-kilometre (4-mile) grid scale. David Jablonski of the NGO Klimadashboard notes that because this model is accurate within a range of around 6.5 kilometres, it cannot fully reflect urban heat islands.

Limitations of Grid-Scale Forecasting

“The analysis probably underestimates the number of people affected in densely populated urban areas,” the organization stated on its European Heat Tracker website. Because the model counts any location where the forecast hits the 30C or 35C threshold at any point, these figures represent the reach of the heatwave.

Shifting the Focus to Human Exposure

By mapping population density against DWD meteorological models, analysts are shifting the focus toward the total exposure of the population.

Quick Facts on Heat Exposure

  • 381 Million People: The number of Europeans expected to experience temperatures above 30C.
  • 191 Million People: The number of Europeans projected to face temperatures at or above 35C.
  • Primary Affected Nations: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Germany.
  • Data Source: Analysis by Klimadashboard using German Meteorological Service (DWD) models and 2025 population projections.
