“Given the importance of the recent events and in order to coordinate the future [rīcību]I have decided to convene an emergency meeting of the European Council in the next few days,” Košta announced on social media.
He stated that after consultations with the member states, he became convinced that the tension related to Greenland threatens transatlantic relations and that Trump’s threats are incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement.
Košta added that the EU is ready to protect itself against pressure. At the same time, the bloc wants to continue constructive cooperation with the United States.
There are common transatlantic security interests in the Arctic, which are ensured within the framework of NATO cooperation, the President of the European Council emphasized.
EU officials say that the summit could take place on Thursday.
As reported, Trump has announced that due to disagreements on the issue of Greenland, from February 1, imports from eight EU member states will be subject to a 10% customs duty.
The new tariffs will apply to all imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
If an agreement is not reached on the sale of Greenland to the United States, this tariff will be increased to 25% from June.
Meanwhile, The Financial Times reports that the EU is considering retaliatory measures against the US.
These include tariffs of €93 billion on imports from the United States, as well as restrictions on American companies operating in the European market.
