Belgium Confirms Eurovision 2026 Participation Amidst Boycotts

Despite growing calls for a boycott linked to Israel’s participation in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, Belgium will proceed with its entry. The French-language broadcaster RTBF will select the country’s contestant, although the Dutch-language broadcaster VRT has expressed support for a boycott.

Growing Concerns and Boycott Movement

Several European public broadcasters have announced they will not participate in the 2026 contest, which will be held in Vienna, Austria, due to concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, press freedom and perceived political interference in the contest. Spain’s RTVE, Ireland’s RTE, Slovenia’s RTVSLO, and the Netherlands’ AVROTROS have all confirmed their withdrawal. RTBF cited a “clear stance” on the protection of civilians and journalists in Gaza as a reason for their participation.

Joint Decision-Making Process

The decision regarding Belgium’s participation was made jointly by RTBF and VRT. VRT and RTBF will collaborate on deciding whether to broadcast the contest, reviewing the list of participants and conditions at an EBU meeting in December. The two broadcasters alternate responsibility for sending a candidate each year, with RTBF taking the lead for the 2026 contest.

Political Pressure in Belgium

Political pressure is mounting within Belgium, with opposition politicians from the Francophone greens and the far-left PTB-PVDA calling for a national boycott. They argue that the EBU’s position on Israel contradicts European values and international law. The Bulletin reported on the growing internal debate surrounding the country’s involvement.

RTBF’s Selection Process

While VRT previously used a public voting system to select its Eurovision entry, RTBF will internally select its candidate for the 2026 contest. The artist chosen by RTBF has not yet been announced.
