Eva Longoria: The Unexpected Hero Who Helped Launch “John Wick”
From actress to savvy investor, Longoria’s story proves taking a chance can lead to big rewards.
Eva Longoria isn’t just known for her captivating performances – she’s also making waves in the world of film finance. Longoria has revealed she played a crucial role in getting the legendary “John Wick” franchise off the ground, providing critical financial support at a crucial moment.
Saving the “John Wick” Picture
Before “John Wick” became a global phenomenon, its creators faced a major hurdle: funding. Co-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, along with star Keanu Reeves, had already invested their own money.
But it still wasn’t enough. Producer Basil Iwanyk even maxed out three credit cards in an attempt to secure the necessary capital for the ambitious revenge action movie.
That’s where Longoria stepped in. Stahelski revealed to Business Insider that Longoria provided the “gap financing,” less than 24 hours before the project was about to be shut down. CAA, the talent agency handling the financing, had contacted some of its clients, inviting them to invest, which is how Longoria was brought on board.
A Beginner Investor with Lucky Timing
Longoria admits she had no prior experience as an investor. “My bankroll was very new, and it was a lot of money, and I was like, ‘So how does it work?’ I had no idea,” she confessed in the same Business Insider interview. “I would love to say I was an investment genius and I just knew and I calculated my risk. No, none of that.”
The offer came from an agent who wasn’t even representing her, who simply told her, “You got money, you should put your money here.” Longoria, unfamiliar with the intricacies of film financing, even found herself asking, “What do you mean gap financing?”
Finding Passion and Profit
Despite her initial lack of knowledge, Longoria’s investment in “John Wick” proved incredibly fruitful. She has continued to produce multiple projects, fueled by a newfound passion for the industry.
Her husband even receives comical updates about her ongoing rewards.
“My husband is friends with the head of Lionsgate, and he’ll say to him sometimes, ‘I see we wrote a check to Eva this week,’” she shared. “But the geniuses were Chad and David and the star that was Keanu. I just wrote the check.”
Longoria’s story serves as a powerful reminder that sometimes, even the most unexpected investments can lead to incredible success.
