Beauty lovers have probably heard the term ‘exosomes‘ floating around. This innovative skincare ingredient is said to rejuvenate skin quality, reduce inflammation and accelerate recovery processes. But what’s the buzz about?
Relatively unknown to us, exosomes are big in the States. Exosomes are tiny vesicles produced by cells to exchange details. You can see them as small packages that transport molecules, such as proteins, lipids and growth factors, to other cells. In this way they initiate recovery and rejuvenation processes, and would contribute to improved skin texture, reduced fine lines and less visible wrinkles. But also for the scalp – and therefore the hair – there would be a lot of advantages: exosomes would stimulate the hair follicles, strengthen the scalp and promote the growth of fuller and stronger hair.
“The idea behind exosomes in skincare is promising as they are able to support recovery processes at a DNA level,” confirms Dr. Hannah Airs, specialist in aesthetic medicine.
Just hype?
There are already products on the market today that contain exosomes, but there is still discussion about whether they really work, and to what extent. Moreover, their effectiveness seems to be related to their origins.Exosomes occur in all living organisms: people, animals, plants and even bacteria. The K-Beauty brand Medicube processes in their viral One Day Exosome Shots for example, exosomes derived from Lactobacillus (from bacteria).
