Hospital General de México Warns of Allergic Symptoms Triggering Respiratory Complications

Constant sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes and nose, coughing, and difficulty breathing signal allergic diseases that require medical attention to prevent serious complications, HT Agencia reported, citing specialists at the Hospital General de México “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga.” Guillermo Velázquez Sámano, head of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Service at the facility, stated that conditions such as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma rank among the most frequent diagnoses, alongside skin manifestations and adverse reactions to foods or medications.

Skin-related conditions include urticaria, angioedema, and atopic dermatitis, which can affect patients’ quality of life. These allergic responses occur when the immune system reacts adversely to specific environmental substances known as allergens. According to Velázquez Sámano, an antigen triggers this bodily response, with common triggers ranging from pollen, mold spores, and house dust mites to animal dander, specific foods, and insect venom introduced through stings.

Clinical Testing and Immunotherapy Treatments Available in Mexico City

Allergens exist both outdoors and inside residential homes, making the precise identification of their origin crucial for establishing an effective medical strategy. At the Hospital General de México, the specialized allergy unit performs comprehensive skin tests, laboratory analyses, and clinical evaluations to isolate the exact substances responsible for patient reactions.

To combat these sensitivities, the department prepares between 80 and 100 immunotherapy vaccines daily, customized to fit the individual clinical needs of each patient. Depending on a patient’s clinical evolution and established international medical recommendations, this treatment plan typically lasts from three to five years. The clinic currently handles roughly 100 consultations per week, alongside emergency interventions for acute conditions like anaphylaxis.

Hereditary Factors and Emergency Signs in Children and Adults

Allergic diseases carry a distinct hereditary component and can manifest early in childhood. In young patients, certain allergies affect the middle ear and lead directly to hearing difficulties. Meanwhile, individuals dealing with asthma experience persistent coughing, phlegm production, chest tightness, and a sensation of breathlessness.

When these respiratory symptoms become intense or resist standard control methods, patients must visit an emergency room immediately to counteract potential asthma attacks or severe allergic reactions. Specialists strongly advise against self-medication, warning that relying on over-the-counter remedies delays proper clinical evaluation and appropriate treatment.
