F1 Races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia at Risk Amidst Middle East Conflict

Formula 1’s upcoming races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are facing serious doubt due to escalating conflict in the Middle East following U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran and subsequent retaliatory strikes. The Bahrain Grand Prix, scheduled for April 12, and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, slated for April 19, are both under review, with cancellation appearing increasingly likely.

Growing Concerns and Potential Cancellation

The situation has prompted Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali to schedule a meeting with the teams on Saturday to discuss the status of both races . Recent strikes have directly impacted Bahrain, with a U.S. Naval base and residential buildings in Manama hit just a week after preseason testing took place at the same venue . Some Formula 1 personnel were still in the country during the attack, and a Pirelli tyre test was subsequently cancelled.

Iran has also launched strikes on sites in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, all of which host Formula 1 races . Multiple high-ranking F1 officials reportedly believe that neither race will proceed .

Logistical Challenges and Calendar Implications

A decision regarding the races needs to be made within the next week due to the logistics of transporting freight between events . Cancellation would create a month-long gap in the schedule between the Japanese Grand Prix on April 29 and the Miami Grand Prix on May 3 . Finding a replacement circuit to host a stand-in race within this timeframe is considered unlikely .

The Middle Eastern races are significant financial contributors to Formula One, with Bahrain owning McLaren and Saudi Arabia having deep ties to the sport . Though, the current security situation is overriding financial considerations.

Impact on Other Motorsport Events

The conflict is also impacting other motorsport series. MotoGP’s Qatar round is facing difficulties, and the World Endurance Championship (WEC) event in Doha has already been postponed .

Formula 1 has not cancelled a Grand Prix since 2023, when flooding in Italy led to the Imola race being scrapped, and had to cancel many races during the 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic .
