Albert Park Turn 6 Renamed to Honor Pioneering Female F1 Engineers

In a historic move for Formula 1, Turn 6 at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Australia, will be officially renamed “In Her Corner” ahead of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. This marks the first time a corner at an F1 circuit has been dedicated to women, recognizing the contributions of Laura Mueller and Hannah Schmitz.

Celebrating Trailblazing Careers

The initiative, a partnership between Engineers Australia and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, celebrates International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8th – Race Day this year. Laura Mueller, the Race Engineer for TGR Haas F1 Team, and Hannah Schmitz, Head of Race Strategy for Oracle Red Bull Racing, are the honorees.

Mueller made history as the first full-time female race engineer in Formula 1, currently working with Esteban Ocon [Grand Prix]. Schmitz is highly regarded for her strategic decisions that have contributed to numerous wins for Red Bull Racing [Speedcafe].

“If You Can See It, You Can Be It”

Both engineers emphasized the importance of visibility and inspiration for future generations. Mueller stated that the “In Her Corner” initiative promotes the idea that “if you can see it, you can be it,” hoping it will motivate young people to pursue careers in STEM fields [Grand Prix]. Schmitz expressed her hope that her career path will inspire others to follow their curiosity and pursue their passions [Grand Prix].

Exclusive Event to Mark the Occasion

An exclusive, ticketed lunch will be held on Thursday, March 5th, to celebrate the dedication of Turn 6 [Grand Prix]. The event, hosted by Ruth Buscombe, will feature a panel discussion with Mueller, Schmitz, Aston Martin’s Driver Ambassador Jess Hawkins, Australian F1 Academy drivers Aiva Anagnostiadis and Joanne Ciconte, rally star Molly Taylor, and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali [Speedcafe].
