Facebook is bringing back the “Poke” button in a major update designed to appeal to younger users. The feature, first introduced more than 20 years ago, is being repositioned as a central part of the social media platform. the “Poke” feature quickly became annoying and few people used it. However, things may be changing now.
Meta, Facebook’s parent company, believes the revival of the Poke button will encourage more playful interaction among users. The company is hoping to recapture the lighthearted spirit of early social media. Users will now have a dedicated “Pokes” tab where they can see who has poked them and easily poke others back.
The original Poke feature allowed users to virtually “poke” their friends, sending a simple notification. While initially popular, it quickly faded into obscurity as Facebook evolved. This new iteration aims to integrate the feature more seamlessly into the user experience.
“We’re seeing a trend where younger users are looking for more casual and fun ways to connect,” said a Meta spokesperson. “The Poke button fits perfectly into that desire. We think it will be a great way to spark conversations and build relationships.”
The update is rolling out to all Facebook users over the next week. Meta is also planning to add new features to the Poke button, such as animated pokes and the ability to send pokes with custom messages.
