Factchequeado Joins Solutions Journalism Network’s Fellowship to Address Latino Health Disparities
Factchequeado has been selected as one of seven U.S. Newsrooms serving Latino communities to participate in the 2026 Addressing Health Disparities Fellowship, offered by the Solutions Journalism Network (SJN). The year-long program will support the organization’s rigorous reporting on health equity through a solutions journalism approach.
Focus on Solutions-Based Reporting
Through the fellowship, Factchequeado will receive a $14,000 grant, along with specialized training and mentorship to strengthen its coverage of health disparities affecting Latino communities. The program also emphasizes professional development for editors and journalists, focusing on reporting healthcare issues through a solutions lens, effectively engaging audiences and identifying responses to systemic inequities in health outcomes .
Expanding Coverage of Critical Health Issues
Ana María Carrano, Managing Editor, and Jonnathan Pulla, a reporter at Factchequeado, will participate in the fellowship cohort. The newsroom will expand its reporting to focus on responses aimed at reducing disparities in healthcare access, chronic disease prevention, culturally competent care, and community-based health initiatives. Latino communities in the U.S. Face significant challenges related to healthcare access and outcomes, often stemming from factors like language barriers, immigration status, economic inequality, and environmental conditions. They are also disproportionately targeted by health misinformation circulating online .
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
Over the next 12 months, Factchequeado will produce solutions-focused stories examining how communities, organizations, and institutions are working to address health disparities affecting Latino populations. The fellowship will also facilitate collaboration with other participating newsrooms, including:
- El Tecolote (Oakland/Bay Area)
- Yale Climate Connections (national)
- Shoresides (Wilmington, North Carolina)
- Tu Prensa Local (Long Island, New York/Suffolk County)
- Tucson Spotlight (Tucson, Arizona)
- Univision 23 (Dallas-Fort Worth)
The stories produced through the fellowship will be freely available for republication through Factchequeado’s network of over 140 allied organizations, including media outlets, community groups, and content creators serving Latino audiences .
Alignment with Factchequeado’s Mission
This initiative aligns with Factchequeado’s commitment to providing reliable, contextualized information to help Latino communities understand the systems and issues impacting their lives. The Solutions Journalism Network’s fellowship will empower Factchequeado to deepen its impact and contribute to more equitable health outcomes within the Latino community .
