Doctor Faces Dismissal After Patient Dies During Unstaffed Medical Watch in Falerna
A physician in Falerna, Italy, is facing potential dismissal following the death of a 69-year-old man, Franco Porco, who sought medical attention at an unstaffed medical guard post. The incident has triggered both a criminal investigation and disciplinary proceedings by the local health authority (ASP) of Catanzaro.
The Tragic Incident and Initial Response
On May 23, 2025, Franco Porco experienced a medical issue and went to the Falerna medical guard station seeking assistance. Regrettably, no doctor was present at the facility. After returning home, Mr. Porco’s condition deteriorated, and he subsequently died. The case was immediately reported by the mayor of Falerna, Francesco Stella, prompting an internal investigation by the ASP.
The lack of immediate medical support highlights a critical gap in emergency healthcare access within the community. According to recent data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), approximately 12% of emergency room visits in the Calabria region – where Falerna is located – are attributed to delays in accessing primary care, potentially exacerbating patient outcomes.
Disciplinary Action and Doctor’s Absence
