FDA to Test Raw Cow’s Milk Cheese for Bird Flu Amidst Outbreaks
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking action to protect public health by testing raw cow’s milk cheese for the presence of bird flu (H5N1). This initiative comes in response to the ongoing outbreaks of avian influenza in various U.S. states.
Testing Procedures
The FDA will collect 300 samples of raw cow’s milk cheese from warehouses and distribution centers nationwide. These samples will be sourced from aged cheeses that have been cured for at least 60 days, as required by U.S. regulations to minimize the risk of pathogen spread. FDA field staff will meticulously select samples of products labeled as aged raw cow’s milk cheese.
The agency anticipates the collection process to be completed by March, but it may be extended depending on the situation.
