Anna Kendrick Recalls “Icky” Directorial Experience That Felt Like a Power Move

Anna Kendrick recently opened up about a cringeworthy experience she had with a director during a film shoot. The Pitch Perfect star revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that a director once asked her to improve a line in front of a large group of extras, only to publicly criticize her work and instruct the crew to return to the script.

Public Humiliation in Front of Extras

Kendrick recounted the incident: “I remember a director once in a room full of 100 extras or something being like, ‘Hey, on this next one just try something. Just make something up. Just improv something,’ ” Kendrick said. “And [I did it] and then the director called cut and came over and, once again in front of 100 extras, was like, ‘Oof, let’s go back to the script!’”

She continued, describing how the moment made her feel: “It really felt like a very specific power move thing to embarrass me, to gain dominance. It was very icky.”

To make matters worse, the improvise line that Kendrick suggested ended up in the film’s trailer! “And then the thing that I improved ended up in the trailer. So f*** you!” she exclaimed in frustration.
