Ferrari Clarifies Halo Fin Legality with FIA After Chinese Grand Prix Test

Ferrari opted to remove aerodynamic fins tested on the central pylon of the Halo during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, prioritizing avoiding potential post-race penalties over immediate performance gains. The team engaged in discussions with the FIA to gain clarity on the legality of the innovation, which initially passed technical checks.

Testing and Removal of Aerodynamic Fins

During the Chinese Grand Prix, Ferrari experimented with fins attached to the central pylon of the Halo during the Sprint race. However, before Saturday’s Qualifying, the team made the decision to remove these aerodynamic elements. This precautionary measure was taken to mitigate the risk of facing scrutiny from the FIA or potential protests from rival teams, as reported by The-Race.com.

Seeking FIA Clarification

Ferrari is continuing discussions with the FIA to obtain a definitive ruling on the legality of the Halo fin design. The team aims to ensure full compliance with regulations before reintroducing the aerodynamic solution in future races. The initial technical checks had cleared the design, but Ferrari sought further assurance to avoid potential issues.

Rear Wing Development

The team also tested a unique rear wing configuration, dubbed the ‘Macarena’ wing, during the sole free practice session. However, Ferrari ultimately decided against using it during the race weekend, as it wasn’t yet optimally configured.

Hamilton’s Podium and Leclerc’s Performance

The Chinese Grand Prix saw Lewis Hamilton achieve his first podium finish with Ferrari, securing third place after a competitive race. Charles Leclerc finished closely behind in fourth position. Hamilton described the race as “one of the most enjoyable races I’ve had in a long, long time,” praising the wheel-to-wheel battle with Leclerc as “awesome – great wheel-to-wheel battle, very fair and just what we want,” according to Formula1.com. George Russell of Mercedes won the race, with Kimi Antonelli finishing second.

Looking Ahead

Ferrari remains committed to innovation and development, balancing the pursuit of performance with the need for regulatory compliance. The team will continue to work closely with the FIA to clarify the legality of its aerodynamic solutions and optimize its car’s performance for upcoming races. Ferrari’s official website confirms the team is on the right path despite needing further improvements to challenge Mercedes’ pace.
