Brandenburg Farmers Demand Changes to Fertilizer Regulations

Brandenburg farmers are pressing state politicians to address key concerns regarding fertilizer regulations, following a recent ruling by the Federal Administrative Court. Their demands center on three core issues: the immediate repeal of the current state fertilizer regulations,a “polluter-pays” exemption for farms employing water-conserving practices, and a complete overhaul of the methodology used to designate environmentally sensitive areas. This overhaul, they insist, must be based on robust scientific data and certified measurement techniques.

Henrik Wendorff, President of the Brandenburg State Farmers’ Association, expressed confidence in the support of Agriculture Minister Hanka Mittelstädt. “We believe Minister Mittelstädt is on our side,” Wendorff stated. “Given the demonstrated legal failings in how ‘red areas’ have been designated, we expect her to prioritize the repeal of the state fertilizer ordinance without delay.”

The farmers’ protest highlights ongoing tensions between agricultural practices and environmental protection efforts within the region. The call for a revised designation methodology underscores a desire for a more transparent and scientifically grounded approach to regulating fertilizer use.
