UAlbany Field Hockey Falls to UMass, 2-1
The UAlbany Great danes field hockey team suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Massachusetts Minutewomen on September 22, 2024. The game, played at a currently unconfirmed location, saw a closely contested match with a late surge from UMass proving decisive.
After a scoreless first quarter,UAlbany broke the deadlock late in the second quarter with a goal from forward Lillian Willis. The goal was assisted by freshman Jette Kurz, who initiated the play with a long pass from approximately the 25-yard line. willis skillfully navigated past multiple defenders, including the UMass goalkeeper, to score her first career goal.
Despite the Minutewomen’s attempts to respond before halftime – including four shots and a penalty stroke – UAlbany goalkeeper Emma Peeters maintained the great Danes’ lead, saving all attempts.
UMass came out strong in the third quarter, eventually equalizing with a goal following a penalty corner. The Minutewomen continued their momentum into the fourth quarter, scoring the go-ahead goal approximately five minutes into the period. UAlbany fought to equalize, registering four shot attempts, including two on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Great Danes will now have a week off before opening conference play against Maine at Alumni Turf on Friday, October 3.
