Roberto Marquez, a Dallas-based artist, has dedicated himself to creating poignant memorials in the wake of tragedies. His latest project honors the seven lives lost in the Med Jets Flight 056 crash in Philadelphia on January 31.

Marquez’s memorials are deeply personal. His journey began when he crossed the U.S. border at age 15, worked in California’s produce fields, became a citizen, built a successful real estate business, and eventually turned to painting. After witnessing tragedies, he felt compelled to use his art as a conduit for healing.

His memorials, often consisting of crosses, flags, and personal touches, serve as symbols of remembrance and unity. For the Philadelphia crash, Marquez plans to incorporate flags from various countries, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the victims.

“I don’t know how many countries these people were from. We’ll see what we can get,” he shared. “We’d like to get some different countries’ flags.”

This inclusive approach underscores Marquez’s belief in the unifying power of shared grief. “There’s one thing that unites us—it has to do with sentiment. When you see somebody crying, I don’t pay attention to what religion… you know?” he explained. “It is that feeling that we as humans have—and that’s what unites us.”

Marquez’s philosophy is rooted in love and action. He believes everyone has a responsibility to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

“We’ve got to do something for others,” Marquez emphasized. “And it can be done in many, many, many different ways. There’s so many ways. But there’s one thing that we need to nurture is love—and practice it. Practice it—and do more practice.”

His message to grieving families is one of empathy and hope.

“Send out my condolences to those families that are grieving. They’re going through this tough time. I’m pretty sure nothing that is going to make them feel good or better this moment—but maybe later.”

Marquez’s dedication to creating memorials comes at a personal cost.

“I’m kind of running low on cash,” he admitted. Yet, he remains steadfast, buoyed by the kindness of strangers.

His story is a testament to the enduring power of compassion and the human spirit. Through his actions, Marquez reminds us all to nurture love, practice kindness, and unite in the face of adversity.

Let’s take this message to heart and find ways to make a positive impact in our own lives and the lives of those around us.
